Online or distance learning is fast becoming an alternative to the traditional classroom educational environment. Distance learning allows students the opportunity to learn and study at their own rate, at a time and a place that may be convenient for them.
Collaborative Project
As adult educators, Vernon Regional Adult Basic Education instructors recognized the need to explore this form of teaching and learning as an option for our students. In the fall of 2003, our Region, along with Hartford, New London, and Middletown Adult Education facilities entered into a collaboration with the Connecticut Distance Learning Consortium to design and pilot an Orientation to Web-based Learning course as well as 4 content area courses.
The testing phase of the Orientation course began during the summer of 2003. The course has been ongoing since then. Surveys are administered to students upon completion of the course. Both the student surveys and the recommendations by the course facilitators are presently being reviewed and used to revise and enhance this introductory course.
In 2004 only 4 content level courses, Algebra, American Government, Physics, and Contemporary Literature, were available to the participating regions. With the start of the 2005-2006 school year, 3 more courses, Geometry, Transitions, and Contemporary Issues, have been added to the course selections. Each course is divided into 2 sessions worth 1/2 credit each session. Each subject is repeated during the school year. For a detailed description of each course and the schedule, please see the Courses link on the Adult Virtual High School website. The 7 content level courses are open to any student in the participating adult education regions in Connecticut. Each student must have either completed the Orientation course or, through demonstration of skills, have the course requirements waived. For more information about required skills, please view Participation link on the Adult Virtual High School website or contact the guidance counselor at your adult education facility.
In the Vernon region, lab times with mentor/facilitators will be provided at various sites and times. Students may also elect to work from home. For those students working offsite, there will be periodic onsite meetings for testing or check ins.
